Therapeutic Bodywork & Massage

Is massage and bodywork the same thing?

They are different.

Bodywork includes massage therapy, chiropractic care, energy work, Shiatsu, Thai massage, reflexology, etc. Massage therapy is a branch of the bodywork “tree”.

On this site, you will see the terms used interchangeably because multiple modalities are offered at Honeysuckle Healing.

How do I prepare best for a bodywork session?

Hydrate like an athlete before a work-out. Make sure you have a meal before your massage but do not eat right before coming in. At least 60-90 minutes between your previous meal and the massage appointment. Take a 10 minute walk beforehand to warm up your tissues if possible. It’s advisable to strength train or perform high impact exercise before your massage, not after. Refrain from wearing lotions or oils on your skin, as well as perfumes and spray-on scents to your appointment, this can interfere with the therapist’s techniques.

What should I wear?

For massage/bodywork appointments, wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Think about staying cozy post-massage experience as well, depending on the season, bring socks and a hat if need be.

What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?

Showing up 5-10 min early is perfectly acceptable, as you will be required to fill out a health history form and consent to care. Afterward, the therapist will review the intake with you and ask specific questions to establish goals for the session, clarify details of intake, and determine what massage plan to co-create that addresses limits and needs. The therapist may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition and to see if you have any presenting complaints.

It is important to list all health concerns and medications so the therapist

can adapt the session to your specific needs without doing any harm. It is also important to list any allergies, so the therapist is aware if she needs

to use a different oil during the session.

Do I have to take off all my clothes?

No, it is up to you and your comfort level what you don’t wear. You will be properly draped under a sheet and blanket at all times. Please expect to remove jewellery, like necklaces, rings, bracelets, dangle earrings, etc. prior to your treatment.

What do I do during a massage treatment?

Relax as much as you can. Use the time to attune to yourself. If your therapist wants you to adjust your position, she will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable.

Many people close their eyes and relax, some fall asleep completely during a session; others prefer to talk.

Will the massage hurt?

Everybody is different when it comes to pressure, some prefer deep tissue massage, whilst others find a soothing gentle massage much more relaxing. What feels right to one client might feel painful for another or too light and ineffective for someone else. The therapist will use a variety of techniques, some working deeper into the muscle tissue than others. Massage should never be painful, but you may feel some discomfort if deep tissue techniques are used on tight or overworked and stressed muscles. Therefore, it is important that you communicate with the therapist regarding your objectives and pressure preferences and feedback any pain or discomfort during your treatment.

What if I am embarrassed about my body?

The massage therapist is a professional who has worked with all body shapes and sizes. She is non-judgmental about your body weight, amount of hair, skin conditions, scars, disabilities, medical conditions, or personal history. Your dignity and modesty will be protected at all times using towels and blankets to comfortably drape your body and preserve your humility. The therapist will leave the room before and after the massage, to allow you to undress and dress with privacy.

Can I talk during the session?

Your treatment is your valuable time and opportunity to relax. If chatting helps you to relax that is fine, but most clients find they can get most benefit from a treatment by practicing quietness, enjoying the relaxing music and touch. In many instances, people may feel more relaxed starting off talking, and as the massage progresses, enter quieter states of relaxation.

There are times when you should feel free to speak up. If the therapist is doing anything to make you uncomfortable, you should let her know immediately. Also, let her know if you get too warm or too cold, or if the pressure needs to be changed (lighter or deeper). If something is not working for you and you are not able to relax during the session, alert the therapist as to how she can make it a better experience for you.

How will I feel after my massage treatment?

It is common for your muscles to feel temporarily tired or heavy, like how they feel after a workout. Some clients receiving a massage feel achy, flu like, or complain of headache after. This is due to all the stagnant bio-chemicals that have been released from your muscles. These symptoms are completely normal and should pass within 24 hours. Keep hydrating reasonably.

It is also normal to experience emotional releases, such as tears, laughter, or a profound sense of relief, for example

Some people feel cold after a massage as the treatment has encouraged blood to flow near the surface of the skin causing heat loss, so again, dress cozy for your appointment.

After your session, you may also feel thirstier than usual. This is because the techniques used in treatment released stagnant fascia up for moisture, blood flow, and fresh oxygen. Help keep your body's tissues hydrated and healthy with a couple extra glasses of water than normal to facilitate the movement of fluids initiated on the treatment table.

When should I not get a massage?

There are very few instances where massage is not recommended, and these are called total contraindications. This includes being under the influence of alcohol, suffering from a cold/flu/fever, diarrhea or vomiting or having a contagious skin infection. There are also ‘local contraindications’ which are conditions affecting specific areas of the body such as cuts, bruises or areas of injury; these areas will be avoided.

Severe medical conditions such as heart problems, respiratory issues, cancer, or epilepsy will require medical approval from your GP stating that you are safe to receive a massage.

The conditions mentioned above are general guidelines only, so if you are concerned that any of the medical conditions apply to you, please contact your therapist first to check that the treatment is suitable for you. You should not attend a massage if you believe that you are suffering from or have been exposed to Covid-19.

Astrology Readings

It is required to have a card on file to book and confirm your appointment.

What kind of things do you focus on?
What kind of techniques do you use in your sessions?

In general, every consultation will include information about the planets, their sign and house placement, what houses they rule, and the aspects they make in addition to repeated symbolic themes and anything else you’d like to focus on in particular.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

You must decide if you would like a birth chart reading or a birth time rectification consultation.

Not knowing your birth time means not knowing your ascendant, or house placements. Without those pieces, the birth chart is incomplete but we can still get a lot of information from what is there.

Birth time rectification consults are specifically for narrowing the birth time down as closely to the original time as possible through a series of questions about life events and certain timings. I do not offer these readings at this time.

Do you predict the future?

Short answer: No

Long answer: I do practice & offer electional astrology consultations, which are all about looking forward at upcoming transits to make educated choices about the best days for signing contracts, getting married, beginning new projects, etc.

I need to reschedule my astrology consultation. How does that work?

If you need to reschedule your appointment, simply contact us via email at [email protected] Please refer to our Terms & Conditions page for more details.

Do you offer synastry/relationship readings?

At this time, I do not. I also do not look at charts of individuals who are not present or who have not given their consent.

Where/How will the consult take place?

Consultations take place on Zoom, which you can use on your phone or desktop. It’s a little easier if you download it beforehand, but that’s not required! You’ll get the zoom link to our meeting in your booking confirmation email.

I’m happy to do a text based consultation if Zoom doesn’t work for you!

Will I get a recording of the consultation?

Yes! And you’re invited to record our consultation on Zoom, which you can do if you join from a desktop or laptop.

I lost my consult recording/forgot to download it. Help!

If your consultation was within the last 3 months, I will likely have a copy I can send you. Email us at [email protected] and we will send you another copy if we have it. If not, we will let you know; c’est la vie!

Do I need a webcam for my consultation?

Web cameras are optional! If you don’t want to be on camera, you’re not obligated to. I’m happy to turn off my webcam if that makes you more comfortable, but I will have mine on otherwise.

Reiki

Do you touch me during a Reiki session?

For Reiki to be effective, physical contact is not necessary. I work through the energetic-astral plane to access healing energy and send it to you, whether we are in the office together or long distance.

What is expected of me while I am receiving Reiki during the session?

It’s highly recommended to make the most of your time by laying down somewhere quiet to close your eyes. Unplug from your devices and consciously connect to your breathing and relax as much as possible. It’s ok to fall asleep!

Yoga + Body Movement

What style of yoga do you teach?

I teach Hatha yoga style postures/asana with vinyasa, Iyengar, yin, kundalini and tantric influences. My meditation style is influenced by tantric philosophy, kundalini, animism, and Tibetan buddhism.

Are these movements safe if I have an injury?

All yoga posture/asana is capable of being helpful or harmful, depending on how mindful you are. Always check with your general practitioner before beginning any movement program, especially if you have an injury, chronic pain or physical limitations that impact your quality of life.

Consulting with a medical professional is always the first step in assessing injury and pain complaints before administering any movement program.

What if it hurts to do the movement?

Then stop the movement. Make a decision to explore it from a gentler perspective and application or if the pain or fear persists, stop doing the movement and consult with your general practitioner.
